Mālō i lelei, warm Pacific greetings to you all as we come to the end of Week Six and the conclusion of Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e Lea Faka-Tonga – Tongan Language Week. Firstly we would like to take this time to thank you all very much for your support with the communication over the very busy past two weeks. There have been a huge number of notices and permission forms sent home requiring your attention and we appreciate the time you have taken to read and respond to all of these. Please remember to check on Hero or our school website to get the most up to date information as it happens and/or contact your child’s classroom teacher.
Last week we participated in a range of mathematical activities and tasks as part of our involvement in Maths Week 2025. A group of 4 Y6 students (Jahkiah, Ezekiel, Preston and Nivish) represented Weymouth Primary School at the Manurewa Primary Schools Mathex competition and placed a credible 4th place! Congratulations to these clever mathematicians! Throughout the week we had a daily quiz for each Team and the winners were: Room 23 (Rangi), Room 17 (Maunga), Room 10 (Papa) and Room 3 (Moana). This week we had the last of our maths workshops. These workshops were an opportunity to work alongside our whānau to share and discuss what the teaching and learning of Maths looks like at school. A big thank you to our whānau who attended these sessions and to our Maths Curriculum team; Mrs Hodge, Mrs Pandey and Whaea Danielle for facilitating these workshops.
This week we are proud to celebrate Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e Lea Faka-Tonga – Tongan Language Week. Our celebrations began with a wonderful flag raising ceremony followed by our opening assembly where our tamariki and staff came together to honour the richness of Tongan language, culture, and traditions. Our theme for this year is ‘Ko 'etau lea, ko e fe’unu mahu’inga ia ki he mo’ui ‘a e Tonga - Our language is a vital strand of our Tongan culture’ and our special guest Jason Afu spoke of the importance of language in knowing who we are and where we come from.
A group of 23 keen runners from Years 4-6 represented our school at the recent Inter-School Cross Country event. The day was filled with energy, and plenty of determination as students from across the district competed with great spirit. Our tamariki gave their best efforts, showing resilience, perseverance, and pride in wearing our school colours. Our top ten finishers from our group were Jael 3rd-Year 4 girls, Siteri 6th-Year 4 girls, Galumaninoa 3rd-Year 5 girls, Dillon 10th-Year 6 boys. These are outstanding achievements with each group racing against 70 other students in their fields. A big thank you to Mrs Johnson, Whaea Kathryn and our wonderful whānau who came down to support on a rainy day.
On Tuesday we were delighted to share songs, dances, and cultural messages at the local library, giving ten of our students a chance to experience and enjoy the beauty of Tongan culture alongside other local schools. It was inspiring to see the pride, confidence, and joy of our students as they participated in these special events.
Our Kāhui Ako came together for a wonderful Cultural Extravaganza on Thursday, where schools from across our community showcased their talents and celebrated diversity through performance. We were treated to a vibrant display from Weymouth Primary students with our Kapa Haka, Pasifika, and Indian dance groups, as well as the diversity and spread of other cultures from our partnering schools, each sharing their culture with pride and joy. Our whole school attended and loved being part of the audience — clapping, cheering, and soaking in the energy of the performances. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the richness of cultures within our community.
As a school, we value the opportunity to learn from each other, celebrate diversity, and strengthen connections within our community. A huge thank you to our Tongan fāmili for dressing our school community, creating a beautiful display in our school hall, guiding our organisation for the week, supporting and encouraging our students, and feeding our community.
Mālō ‘aupito to all who helped make this week such a success!
