Acting Principal's Talanoa
Moana Iese
Kia ora koutou, talofa lava and warm greetings to our Weymouth Community, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and our beautiful Tamariki.
We’ve had much to celebrate over the last two weeks! The first of our celebrations was Cook Island Language Week and it was awesome to see the integrated learning that was happening in the class, as well as our Cook Island students taking the lead in some of that learning. We also appreciated the whānau support and especially those who attended the meeting to help plan our week of learning.
The second of our celebrations was Maths Week. We’ve had maths challenges happening each day with students solving mathematical problems and entering their strategies and answers into lucky team draws for prizes! At lunchtime some of our senior students organised a Kahoot Maths Challenge where class teams of four competed against other classes in their team. The winner of the Kahoot Challenge was the team that answered the maths questions correctly and the quickest. All of our students also completed their Basic-Facts-A-Thon! Thank you to all our whānau who have supported their children in learning and practicing their basic facts, and for your sponsorship and donations. Knowing the basic facts is important for children to utilise these when they are solving more complex problems - and although the funds are a great incentive, we were more focused on our children learning their facts. Please continue to practise these, and talk to the classroom teacher about what the next level of facts would be to learn. Our whānau Maths Together workshops started this week and we have 12 whānau registered. We look forward to sharing some ideas and strategies with you over the next couple of weeks about how you can help your child at home with Maths.
Year 6 - Intermediate
On Wednesday, our Year 6s attended the Waimahia Intermediate Open Day where they got to meet the Principal, talk to students and teachers, and participate in some learning activities. Enrolments are now open at Waimahia Intermediate and we encourage you to complete the necessary forms as soon as possible.
Chickenpox
As per our HERO notification on Tuesday 13th, we have had a few students with chickenpox. Chickenpox is spread through the air by people who have it when they sneeze or cough, and by direct contact with mucus, saliva, or liquid from blisters. Our classrooms will be thorough in wiping down surfaces regularly. If your child is presenting with Chickenpox symptoms (fever, headache, runny nose, cough, red rash, blisters), please keep your child at home. Your child can keep spreading it until all their blisters have dried up. This usually takes 5 to 7 days. Please seek medical advice if you have any concerns about your child’s health.
Next week we look forward to a wonderful learning week with Tonga Language Week. The 2024 theme for Tonga Language Week is 'E tu'uloa 'a e Lea faka-Tongá 'o ka lea'aki 'i 'api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-'a-kāingá - The Tongan Language will be sustainable when used at home, church and in the wider community.
Have a wonderful weekend everybody.
