We are on our way with the second half of the year.  Reports went home last term with an update on the learning and progress that have been made so far, and some identified goals of what we will be working on.  This term would be the ‘knuckle down’ and really work hard on your learning goals, putting into practice what you’ve learnt in the first half of the year, and building on these skills and understandings.  We encourage you to make a little time do some reading each night - whether it be a school book, a Duffy Book you have at home, or the local junk mail.  Taking some time to do a little writing - writing about something you’ve done as a family, writing about a photograph, or something you’ve found outside.  Try writing something together :)  There are lots of maths practice you can do with just the ordinary everyday tasks that you do at home, like, reading the numbers on the letterboxes as you are walking past or reading the numbers on licence plates of cars.  Cooking presents lots of opportunities to do maths, like measuring ingredients, and using lots of maths words, such as more than, less than, the same as.  If you need other ideas, please ask your class teacher, or check out our school website.

We know that being at school every day is important for our tamariki. 

Last term, Weymouth Primary School was asked to host the launch of a Leadership Programme called Te Pā Rea Rangatira in conjunction with Tui Tuia / Learning Circle and partners.  This event took place on Tuesday 30 July.  Our Rangi Team students were part of the whakatau to welcome the distinguished guests attending, including our very own Whaea Saane, and Sir Ashley Bloomfield.  We had our Ambassadors and House Leaders meet and greet our manuhiri at the gate and take them on a little tour of our school.  Our senior Pasifika students and Kapa Haka roopu performed a couple of items as part of this welcome.  Tui Tuia presented our school with three harakeke plants, which were blessed by Matua Reg during a planting ceremony that included key people as well as two of our own students, Rourke and Ashleen.  This event showcased our amazing students and the way they uphold our vision, values and Weymouth Way.  We were very proud of all our tamariki, and very thankful to the many hands and heads that helped with the preparation and organisation of the event.

On Wednesday 31 July we had our Learning Conversations.  Thank you to all our whānau for making the time to come and talk to the teachers with your child/ren.  We hope these were beneficial for you and you were able to ask questions regarding your child’s learning, progress and next steps.  If you were unable to attend, please contact the classroom teacher to arrange an alternative day and time.

By now you should be well on your way to learning the basic facts you have been given to learn.   Basic facts knowledge is important.  Being able to commit these to memory and instantly recall the facts is a goal for our students.  Our website provides some ways to practice the basic facts. 

Our Basic Facts testing day will be held on Thursday 15 August.  All money raised will go back into the classroom to purchase maths-related games and activities.

We are fortunate to have two organisations in our school at the moment supporting the development of Physical Education.  Manurewa Netball are carrying out skills and development lessons with our Year 4/5 Maunga team, and Counties Manukau Sport are conducting fundamental movement skills sessions for teachers and students in Year 0-2.  

Weymouth Primary School look forward to celebrating the culture and language of the Cook Islands next week.  The theme for this year is “Ātui’ia au ki te vaka o tōku matakeinanga - Connect me to the canoe of my tribe”.  We will be holding our opening assembly on Monday at 1.30pm with a special guest performance.  All whānau are welcome to attend.

This term we will be holding ‘Maths Together’ Workshops for whānau.  These will be run over three consecutive Wednesdays from 6-7pm.  In these workshops we hope to share with you some information about the Maths Curriculum and how you can support your child/ren at home with some fun activities and games.  If you are interested in these three workshops, please complete this registration form, or complete the form that will be coming home today.  If you need childcare we can provide care of Weymouth Primary School children only.

Our school uniform is compulsory and all students must adhere to the rules applying to uniform.  Uniforms should be named so they can be returned if found.  A Lost Property bin is located by the staffroom.  See Miss Raema if you are unsure where to look.

Monday:  Students may wear their House T-Shirt, or school uniform

Tuesday - Thursday:  Students must wear their school uniform

Friday:  Students may wear their school uniform or may wear non-uniform clothing appropriate for a school day
