PRINCIPAL'S TALANOA
Saane Faaofo Oldehaver
Kia ora koutou, talofa lava and warm greetings to our Weymouth Community, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and our beautiful Tamariki.
OUR KAUPAPA - this term our focus of the Weymouth Way is ‘we learn’. It has been awesome seeing our children engage in so many different activities from Science, to Reading, to Maths, to Writing, to Art, to P.E. to name a few. At WPS we work hard to engage our children in authentic learning experiences. We believe that our role is to offer opportunities so our children can find that passion that they believe in and dream big for their future, as they learn. Please keep encouraging your children to follow our Weymouth Way. We think. We help. We learn. We care. Our values of respect & honesty. Our vision ‘Strive for the Best’. We talk about these every day at our school.
AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY RESEARCH - Our seniors are currently involved in a research project with Yimei who is investigating the importance of having a māra on site and what it does for the well-being of our children and families. I encourage you to take part in this. Your children from the Maunga and Rangi teams will be bringing home letters to say if they can take part in the research and also for our families too. This is another wonderful opportunity, so come on everyone get involved.
WAIMAHIA INTERMEDIATE - our Year 6 students took part in the Open Day at our local intermediate school and they absolutely loved the experience. They learnt about all the wonderful things they will do if they choose Waimahia. I encourage all parents of our Year 6 students to pop in and say hi and see if this is the right school for you.
TONGAN LANGUAGE WEEK - is fast approaching. We love celebrating all languages, so hopefully you can join us for Tongan Language Week. On Monday 4th of September we will have the opening ceremony with an assembly at 9.30am. On Friday 8th of September at 9.30am we will have the closing assembly where we will have lots of sharing of learning from the week. Throughout the week we will have children learning all about the Tongan culture. We hope lots of parents will come and support us to share the Tongan culture with our whole school.
The theme for Uike Lea Faka-Tonga 2023 is 'E tu'uloa 'a e Lea faka-Tongá 'o ka lea'aki 'i 'api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-'a-kāingá, which means the Tongan Language will be sustainable if used at home, church and in the wider community.
RELATIONSHIPS FIRST VOICE COLLECTION - a huge thank you to our staff, children and families who shared their voice with Rosina Wikaira on their experiences of being a part of Weymouth Primary School. We will make sure we look at the voices when they are presented to us to make sure we are doing the best we can for all our families. We will also feedback some of our key findings from the talanoa that was had.
I spoke to Rosina at the end of the day with our Leadership team and she was truly blown away and said our school is living our kaupapa of ‘family and relationships’ and offering opportunities for authentic learning for our children.
Next term we'll hold some focus groups meetings of parents as we begin to develop our planning for 2024. We would love to hear what you think we are doing that is great and what we need to develop. We would love to hear what you want your children to know and learn and how we can support you in the home. Watch this space for the dates and times.
