PRINCIPAL'S TALANOA
Saane Faaofo Oldehaver
Kia ora koutou, talofa lava and warm greetings to our Weymouth Community, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and our beautiful Tamariki.
BELONGING - I have been reading a lot about what it means to belong. I have a book called ‘Valuing our Values’ and it has been enlightening hearing what they say. I feel I am seeing more and more of our children and families feel like they really belong to our school community. To me this means at our school we do our very best to make sure we have a strong connection with every child and every family. I see teachers’ greeting children in their language, I see each class starting the day with prayer, I see children feeling comfortable to speak their own language and I see our senior students welcome visitors to our school in multiple languages including songs and hymns. To be bilingual is so awesome and we need to celebrate this every day. If you think there is more we can do to ensure everyone feels like they belong, please send me an email or pop in and see me.
OUR TEACHERS’ HAVE SETTLED THE CLAIMS - Thank you to all of you for supporting our primary teachers. They have now settled and we are good to go. Most of the claims will kick in 2024 but again, we thank you all for your support.
Unfortunately our Principals’ have not settled yet. I was in Wellington on Monday for a crisis meeting with principals from across the country. We tried to stay solutions focused and come up with ways to fix the problems. There are many Principals not lasting 5 years in the role and some are walking out as the role is becoming more and more stressful. Three things were discussed: autonomy, better conditions and competitive remuneration. So, please continue to support our principals in any way you can.
LAST DAY OF TERM - We finish at 2pm on the last day. After School Care will not happen on the last day of term. So please organise to pick your children up at 2pm.
ORAL READING PRESENTATIONS - Today was the first time at WPS we have had Oral Reading Presentations with our tuakana-teina classes. We have been talking about how we support our children to be confident readers in front of their peers and I am so proud of our children. A huge thank you to our teachers who made it a special day by inviting parents, and making it a special day.
I AM HOPE show - We were fortunate enough to have a group of talented teens come and share their messages about bullying and the importance of being kind every day in your words and actions.
STEAM ACADEMY CLASSES - Some of our students have just completed Steam After School Classes and they were very successful. Mrs Iese is having a meeting to see if we can continue them in Term 3.
MATARIKI MARKET DAY - We are super excited for our market day on Tuesday 27th of June. Our children have been working hard preparing products to sell. We will send a flyer closer to time of the organisation for the day.
HALL CHAIRS - We are selling our old hall chairs as we have just purchased new ones. You can buy a set of 4 for $10.00. If you are interested please phone the Office and payment can be made in cash to the Office ladies.
