Kia ora koutou, talofa lava and warm greetings to our Weymouth Community, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and our beautiful Tamariki.

As I reflect on the week we have just completed, my heart is full and warm. We are finally getting back to some sort of normal. Seeing all of you at our Samoan Language week sharing assembly was beautiful. We are blessed to have an amazing community who are so supportive of our school.

Thank you again for also supporting our teachers on Wednesday. We are blessed with your support for our staff. Thank you for coming and picking up your beautiful children early, we are so thankful for you all.

COLDS & FLU - We all need to take care as winter is approaching. We have a number of staff who have not been 100% but who are turning up every day - thank you. Please look after your families to keep them safe and warm over the next four weeks left of Term 2.

KING’S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND - this is a gift to have a Long Weekend. So take some time to spend together as a family and enjoy the extra day off.

Faafetai Tele Lava

CHEE HOO!!! On Monday 29th May 2023 eight students from the Rangi Team (who are going to Waimahia Intermediate school next year) went to the Ava Ceremony with Whaea Saane. We travelled by the Weymouth Primary School Van to get there. Two people from each class in the Rangi Team were chosen.

I was excited to see what Waimahia Intermediate School had waiting for us. When we arrived, we jumped out of the Van, took 2 minutes to take a photo and entered the gates. There were lots of classes that stared at us awkwardly but I recognised a few faces and it was cool to see them. The theme for this year is Mitamita i lau gagana, maua'a lou fa'asinomaga' which means ‘Be proud of your language and grounded in your identity’.

Later when we went inside the hall there were seats just for the guests. Two students were getting ready to host. The Principal was in front of us. Miss Samoa New Zealand, Shiloh Filipi was also there and Fa’anānā Efeso Collins. The other guests were Moana Pasifika - Danny Gautusa and Tomasi Alosio.

The Ceremony started and we started off with a lotu. We all then sang the Samoan National Anthem. Some boys from Apolima( Room 12) gave thanks. They did really well pronouncing the words and sounded like fluent speakers. There was also a boy that was tasked with giving the kava from this big wooden bowl, to the guests. He had to wait to be called upon before he was able to bring the kava to the guests.

Fa’anānā Efeso Collins spoke and most people laughed because his speech was entertaining. Miss Samoa New Zealand, Shiloh, then told us some things about her childhood and left some awesome messages about the importance of language and identity. Danny also spoke on behalf of Moana Pasifika and he was actually a teacher and he started Apolima. He spoke so well. I listened to them closely and they were really inspiring.

Later on we said our closing prayer and I felt honoured to be part of this Ceremony. We then took some photos. I had an amazing time at Waimahia Intermediate and hopefully next year we could do the same thing.
