Kia ora koutou, talofa lava and warm greetings to our Weymouth Community, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Cousins and our beautiful Tamariki.

Teacher Only Day - We had a fantastic Teacher Only Day on Monday 24th of April where all staff came in for the day to do some learning. We engaged in NZ Aotearoa Histories curriculum and developed our knowledge and understanding of our local area to add to our local curriculum. We also engaged in the new curriculum which is super exciting as it is written first and foremost honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We did some more work on Te Reo Maori and tikanga including lots of hand on activities to support teachers in classrooms. We also managed to share some resources for our ESOL (English Speakers of other Languages). We had lots of opportunities to learn and also to share kai and Talanoa about our learning. A huge thank you to all our facilitators for your organisation and preparation for the day. A huge thank you to our families for allowing us to have this day.

NZEI - Our union is working really hard for our teachers and our principal on better pay and better conditions and resources. in order to be able to do our job. Principals have been told to only work from 8am to 5pm daily and not engage in anything extra over this term. Teachers are deciding if the latest offer is going to be accepted by the majority.

We know this can be disruptive for our families but we thank you all for your support. We need to get our Government to realise teaching and the value of our teachers, who work extremely hard. We are asking them to listen and make our profession an attractive profession that we can get our next generation to want to go into. Currently our young people are not even thinking of teaching as a career and we all need to work collectively, to ensure we have teachers in front of classes every day.

ATTENDANCE - We know it is important to come to school everyday. We have only 1000 hours at school in a year. So if your child has one day off that is 1000 - 5 hours. So if your child keeps missing days it makes it hard for your child to keep up with their learning and achieve the successes they deserve. I am sharing below a graph of the attendance rates for Term 1. Please help us to improve these for Term 2. Lateness - please also help us by getting your child to school on time. School starts at 8.50am and children are expected in classes at 8.30am.

SUPPORT WE OFFER - Did you know we have free: lunches, fruit, weetbix and milk, stationery, trips, hats and House T- shirts. We offer all of these supports so your job is just to get your children to school every day.

ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATIONS - Firstly a huge thank you to the room 5 students last year who made our beautiful wood poppies and alongside Mr and Mrs Hughes they painted them and prepared them for our school display to remember all those who died. A huge thank you to Mr Walker for making this area a beautiful quiet space where our children can come and reflect on what it means.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW CLEANERS FROM CREST CLEANERS - A warm welcome to Asveen and Rashika Chandra who joined us this term as our new cleaners. We welcome you to Weymouth and hope you enjoy your time with us.

SPELLATHON - we are excited to have a Spellathon to support our children to learn more words to use in their everyday lives. We have uploaded the spelling lists onto our website. That way you can do their list but also keep going to teach them more if you wish.

MEMORIAL FACT FOR WORLD WAR 1
Eren's reading group read the article: In Memory First World War Memorials. As part of their learning they created a poster that shows three examples of memorials in Aotearoa in remembrance of those that served.

DESCRIPTIVE WRITING
Viliami's writing group are learning to add details to their writing and they know that they have done this by adding interesting WOW words and using descriptive language.

WRITING LETTERS
After ANZAC day, school commenced for Term 2 and room 19 took this opportunity to really deepen our understanding about ANZAC and why we commemorate this historical event in Aotearoa. We began by listening to audio recordings that were recorded from World War 1 and 2. As we closed our eyes and imagined ourselves in this setting, many students talked about how they felt terrified and frightened, however some said they felt brave and courageous because they wanted to fight for our country. After this activity we wrote letters pretending that we were soldiers going to war to fight for our country. We wrote letters to our families back home. We would like to share Shyla-Flynn Upoko-Rudolph and Jahziah Witehira’s letter. We hope you feel the emotion that we felt learning about ANZAC day and the sacrifice that was offered by these strong men. Lest we forget.

Speech on climate change
Kia ora, Kia orana and Malo e lelei.

Ko Heremia toku ingoa. My name is Heremia.

And today, I am here to tell you about climate change and its Impact on our Environment, and how we as Kaitiakitanga (Guardians) can help with it.

Firstly, I'd like to talk about what climate change has done to our environment already.

Since the 1800’s, climate change has terrorised our world, but the climate wasn't changing itself. Scientifically proven, it is Humanity that is driving climate change. Climate change can have a very big impact on our environment, because it is related to natural disasters. These disasters can happen at any time, and this was a condition both before and after climate change. Climate change has increased the chances of these disasters happening significantly over the past 200 or so years. Climate change is linked to all forms of weather, so it can almost, if it doesn’t already, control our weather. This means plants may not grow properly due to the sudden weather changes, if so, this is happening due to climate change.

Secondly, I’d like to talk about how climate change is driven by humans, and our activity around it.

Ever since it was discovered, climate change was driven by humans. Climate change is a direct link and potential result of Global Warming. This period of Global warming, and this may shock you, can NOT be explained by the Sun. The true cause of Global Warming is actually “Greenhouse Gases” or “The Greenhouse Effect.” These effects and gases are a direct emission of Carbon Dioxide and many other chemical atoms/chemicals. Many believe that global warming is caused by climate change, some believe Climate change is caused by us humans burning fossil fuels, such as coal, wood, etc. This is ANOTHER emission of “Greenhouse Gases” and “The Greenhouse Effect.” Many other causes lay yet to be proven, and some have already been proven, though I'm not going to waste your time listing all of them.

In conclusion I wish to talk about how we can help with climate change.

We can help with climate change by reducing our use and emissions of greenhouse gases and such. This can be possible if we stop using fossil fuels, which I admit, may take some time to get used to judging on how much we use them now. We can also prevent climate change’s escalation by eating healthier and using more economically friendly resources and appliances. Earth’s economy is practically run on plants and nature, so we must try our best to succeed against change in order to help our world. If Climate change continues to happen, all of earth may die due to the lack of plants and oxygen, or worse. This is why we must put an end to climate change.
